Deputies searching for Sorrento murder suspect

SORRENTO, Fla.—A man is on the run, accused of killing a man in Sorrento Thursday, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses said Justin Kates, 37, and Justin Joseph Raymond Fout, 31, engaged in a verbal argument Thursday at 31504 Colby Place in Sorrento. The argument apparently escalated and Fout shot Kates, killing him, LCSO said. He was found dead lying in the roadway when deputies arrived on scene.

Fout fled the scene, along with Patricia Neeley, in an older model white Dodge Ram van. The van should have front and rear end damage and red transfer paint on the rear; the rear right door is spray-painted black, and the left rear door window is busted out, according to LCSO.

A warrant has been issued for Fout’s arrest for second-degree murder; Neeley is not facing charges at this time, but she is a person of interest. If you have information on their whereabouts, call LCSO at 352-343-2101.

Summerfield man facing murder charges in deaths of victim and alleged accomplice in 2022 gunfight outside Leesburg

LEESBURG, Fla.—A man on the run for nearly a year is in custody facing murder charges in the deaths of his intended home invasion victim – and his alleged accomplice.

Dieuseul Charlemon, 22, was taken into custody on multiple warrants including first- and second-degree murder on Jan. 31 by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Ocala Police Department and US Marshals at 10131 SE 169th Lane, Summerfield after a months-long investigation, MCSO said.

On Feb. 16, 2022, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to 804 Montclair Road in unincorporated Leesburg on a report of a shooting around 4:30 a.m. There were signs of forced entry at the front door, LCSO Lt. John Herrell said in 2022, and no details were released about what may have happened, but Herrell said a home invasion had not been ruled out.

On Wednesday, Assistant State Attorney Nick Camuccio confirmed to Inside Lake, detectives believe Charlemon and his alleged accomplice, Jamari DeAndre Jones, 20 years old at the time of the crime, invaded Jammy Casteel’s home and a “firefight” ensued. Casteel, 41, was found shot on the front porch and transported to UF Health Leesburg hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, and Jones was found dead inside the home, Herrell said in 2022.

Charlemon was indicted for the first-degree murder of Casteel and the second-degree murder of Jones in March 2024, Camuccio said, “He’s been on the run for awhile.”

After being taken into custody, Charlemon was found to be in possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. In addition to the Lake County murder charges, he is facing an armed burglary charge in Sumter County, and failure to appear for aggravated fleeing to elude, fleeing to elude a law enforcement officer, grand theft of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting arrest and driving on a suspended license in Marion County. CAPTURED: NY double murder suspect spotted near Lake County taken into custody in Daytona Beach

2 p.m. Update: Scott Mitchell has been taken into custody in Daytona Beach.

PHOTO: Volusia Sheriff’s Office

DeLAND, Fla.—A man suspected of killing two men in New York was spotted in DeLand Tuesday, just a few miles outside of Lake County, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office and authorities are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Scott C. Mitchell is wanted for the murders of Daniel McCloe, 58, and Marshall VanOven 55, after they were found dead in a Binghampton, New York home earlier this month. Binghampton is located about 180 miles northwest of New York City.

Mitchell is believed to have first fled to Dorchester County, South Carolina after deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Saturday. Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office deputies located the vehicle, and determined it belonged to Mitchell.

On Tuesday, Volusia Sheriff’s Office said it was actively looking for Mitchell who is now suspected to be in the DeLand area. Mitchell is thought to be on foot, and a motorist’s dash cam captured a man, believed to be Mitchell, walking along Hontoon Road in the DeLand area, just a few miles from Lake County on Tuesday. Major traffic shift for this year’s Eustis Georgefest Parade

EUSTIS, Fla.—Motorists will experience a new traffic shift during the City of Eustis Georgfest Parade scheduled for Feb. 22.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Feb. 22, State Road 19 (Bay Street) southbound will be shut down between County 44 and Herrick Avenue and travelers will be diverted onto either westbound or eastbound County Road 44, at the intersection that includes 7-Eleven, Burger King, Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy, Eustis Police Chief Craig Capri told Inside Lake. Northbound traffic on State Road 19 (Grove Street) will not be affected. Drivers should expect delays and plan an alternate route, Capri said.

This is a major shift from year’s past when the city shut down Bay Street for the parade and both northbound and southbound traffic traversed on Grove Street for the duration of the parade.

“For the safety and security of all those attending the event, we implemented a new traffic pattern; I know some people may be unhappy, but this is necessary,” Capri said. “It’s a minor inconvenience for a few hours, but public safety is paramount.”

Capri said the road construction downtown also played a role in the decision.

Businesses on State Road 19 between County Road 44 and North County Road 452 will be open, and EPD will allow vehicles to access those businesses. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Bay Street and Norton Avenue and travels northbound on Bay Street until its conclusion at Bates Avenue; it’s expected to end around noon, and once parade participants have cleared the area, Bay Street will reopen, Capri said.

Charge dismissed against dentist in 2023 golf course altercation, “Stand Your Ground” motion granted

TAVARES, Fla.—An aggravated battery charge a Leesburg dentist was facing has been dismissed after a Lake County Circuit judge granted a motion, based on Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law filed by his defense attorney last year.

Dr. Eddie Orobitg was arrested following an altercation on the Harbor Hills golf course in unincorporated Leesburg in April 2023, accused of beating another man with a golf club. The altercation began when Orobitg yelled at Dr. Joseph Sivak and his wife as they walked on the 11th fairway, approximately 60 yards away from where Orobitg was golfing with his minor son, according to the motion filed by Orobitg’s attorney, Nicholas Stack of Hatfield & Stack in Tavares.

Sivak, a psychiatrist, “immediately” turned around and began waving his arms and yelling unintelligibly. He stepped to Orobitg on the 11th tee box, shoved him and said, “(expletive) you!” according to the motion. Orobitg regained his balance and Sivak yelled, “You just hit me with a golf club!” to which Orobitg replied, “You’re a (expletive) psycho!” and spat on Sivak. Sivak then swung a 36-ounce water bottle at Orobitg, knocked his prescription sunglasses from his face and hit him in the forehead. Orobitg then punched Sivak in the face, and Sivak fell to the ground followed by Orobitg, and the pair tussled on the ground, the motion states.

Orobitg disengaged Sivak and Sivak got up and charged him multiple times and then the men kicked each other. Orobitg used his foot to keep Sivak down and could be heard telling him to stay down in a 911 call. Sivak regained his footing, attempted to grab a golf club from Orobitg’s bag and Orobitg pushed him to the ground and used his foot to leverage the golf club from Sivak’s hand. Sivak then armed himself with golf balls from Orobitg’s golf cart and threw the balls at Orobitg’s son before finally walking away, according to the motion. Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene and Orobitg was arrested for aggravated battery and transported to the Lake County Jail.  He retained Stack as counsel approximately two weeks after his arrest.

Dr. Eddie Orobitg

In the motion filed in August 2024, Stack stated the charge should be dismissed based on “Florida’s Stand Your Ground” law. The law states, in part, “A person is justified is using or threatening to use deadly force if he or she reasonably believes that using force or threatening to use such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony.”

Lake Circuit Judge Heidi Davis agreed and granted the motion to dismiss, following a hearing late last month. She stated in her ruling, “The Court finds that a reasonable and prudent person playing golf with their child, being confronted and shoved by an angry man would likely use more force than a spit. That is not to say the Court finds this action appropriate. To the contrary, two grown men of their statuses as doctors, should not behave in such a manner. The Court also finds that a reasonable and prudent person being hit in the head with a water bottle (retaliation for being spit upon) would have protected himself and his child with his hands and feet while the assailant continues to approach them in an aggressive manner while attempting to get the assailant to cease efforts to prolong the altercation. The Court also finds that a reasonable and prudent person would use his hands and feet to wrench a golf club out of an assailant’s hands to prevent that golf club being used upon them. Accordingly, the Court finds that the State has failed to overcome Defendant’s self-defense claim with clear and convincing evidence.”

Stack told Inside Lake Friday, he is pleased with outcome, “This has been a very long, emotional and trying time for Dr. Orobitg and his family. He and his business have received extremely negative treatment as a result of the arrest and coverage; his integrity was questioned. I am very happy that the facts of the case have finally come to light, and the truth has been revealed. We are very fortunate to have had a Judge brave enough to follow the letter of the law.”

Mount Dora man killed in single-vehicle Tavares crash

TAVARES, Fla.—Tavares Police Department is investigating after a man was found deceased in his crashed vehicle by a passerby early Wednesday morning.

At 12:50 a.m., a 911 caller reported he was walking and saw overturned truck in an open construction field in the area of Dead River Road and Sierra Drive approximately 50 yards from the roadway. Police are unsure how long the 2018 Chevrolet pickup truck was there before it was discovered, TPD Public Information Officer Courtney Sullivan said, and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them.

The driver, Michael Winterbottom, 63, of Mount Dora, was found in the truck and pronounced deceased on the scene.

Names and body cam released in deadly Clermont domestic incident

CLERMONT, Fla.—Clermont Police Department has released the names of the couple found dead after a domestic incident Wednesday.

Christian Steeler Filson, 28, and Sarah Dale, 29, were found dead after an unidentified caller reported Dale was screaming and being chased by a man at Cottonwood Clermont, 1200 Hooks Street, shortly before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

When officers arrived, they began searching for the victim and spotted blood near an apartment in building 12. Officers entered apartment 12202, and found Dale, with a mortal gunshot wound.

“When our officers arrived, they immediately observed what appeared to be blood and a spent bullet casing outside of an apartment,” CPD Chief Charles Broadway said. “They began to conduct a well-being check but received no response from inside.”

Officers attempted to conduct an assessment of the scene and the victim, who appeared to be deceased, and they were immediately met with gunfire, CPD Capt. Malcolm Draper said. They returned fire and Filson retreated back into the apartment building.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will conduct its own investigation, standard procedure when an officer fires a weapon.

Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies responded to the scene including Mid-Florida SWAT, comprised of officers from Leesburg Police Department, Mount Dora Police Department and Eustis Police Department, along with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Groveland Police Department. Lake EMS, Clermont Fire Department and Groveland Fire Department also responded.

“This was truly a team effort and through this joint effort, a safe entry was made and no officers were injured,” Broadway said.

Officers attempted to make verbal contact with Filson and never got a response, Draper said. After using drones and a robot to gather intel, Mid-Florida SWAT made entry to the apartment and found Dale fatally wounded and Filson dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Draper said CPD had one previous call for service to the apartment in October 2024 after an anonymous tipster reported someone was acting “erratically.”  Officers responded and were unable to find anyone, Draper said.

Filson was arrested in Lebanon, Tennessee in 2017 for aggravated robbery and reckless endangerment after being accused of robbing two men in a Kroger grocery store parking lot of $15 and firing a shot as the victims followed him out of the parking lot, according to local media reports. The victims called police and continued to pursue Filson down West Main Street in Lebanon, where he purportedly fired a second shot.  He was taken into custody by police and released on bond. The disposition of the Tennessee case was not available at press time.
