TAVARES, Fla.— Tavares Police Department is investigating the death of a law enforcement recruit who suffered a medical emergency Monday night.
“Morlon Jenkins, 42, experienced a medical emergency during the first night of the Florida Law Enforcement Academy at the Institute of Public Safety, a campus of Lake Technical College in Tavares,” TPD Det. Courtney Sullivan said in an email.
Around 7:15 p.m., Jenkins began experiencing a medical emergency during physical training required by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Lake Technical College (LTC) said in a statement. Instructors immediately called emergency services, Sullivan said, and he was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. All students participating in the Florida Law Enforcement Academy program are required to have medical clearance from a physician, and Jenkins had medical clearance, LTC said.
TPD detectives are working with the Medical Examiner to determine Jenkins’ cause of death.
