Violent End to August as LCSO Investigates 5 Homicides in 6 Days

LAKE COUNTY, Florida— It was a bloody and violent end to August in Lake County, as the sheriff’s office continues to investigate five homicides that occurred in just six days from one end of the county to the other. Numerous sources have told Inside Lake there was yet another homicide in unincorporated Fruitland Park Saturday, but LCSO did not respond to an email or a text all day Sunday to confirm.

Altoona, Aug. 25

Around 9 p.m. Aug. 25, Shane Eugene Clements, 41, of Altoona, and David Thomas Mikell, 34, of Umatilla were found dead at a home at 45918 Pennsylvania Road in Altoona. The two men were shot, and deputies were looking for two persons of interest, Roger Myles Gilbert, 35, and Samantha Butler, age unknown, both of Alabama.

The following day Gilbert and Butler fled from Ormond Beach Police and crashed in a KFC parking lot. Butler was found dead in the wrecked white Volvo and Gilbert fled on foot. OBPD does not believe Butler died from injuries sustained in the crash but has not released a manner or cause of death.

Gilbert was apprehended in a nearby Dollar Tree and is being held in the Volusia County Jail on a variety of charges, including possessing the stolen gun that was found in his waistband.

Gilbert remains a person of interest in the deaths of Mikell and Clements but has not been charged. LCSO has not revealed a motive for the slayings.

Unincorporated Clermont, Aug. 31

A man was arrested Wednesday after a young woman reported he raped her repeatedly and killed his own stepson at 244 Jewelfish Lane in the Thousand Trails RV Resort in unincorporated Clermont. The woman told LCSO she heard screaming and found Justin Jones, 41, on top of his stepson, Ty Finister, 17, striking him.

She screamed for Jones to stop, and he slammed her to the ground, duct-taped her ankles, wrists, mouth and eyes and raped her repeatedly. Eventually she was able to escape and call for help. LCSO responded and found Finister dead, along with his mother, Sandra Gaudino, 38. The rape victim’s relationship to both murder victims and Jones is not being released because she is the victim of a sex crime.

Jones was apprehended walking southbound near a Publix, 4351 U.S. Highway 27, Clermont. Earlier this week LCSO released body cam showing Jones being taken into custody.

He was arrested for two counts of domestic first-degree murder, domestic false imprisonment and domestic sexual battery. Jones, of Michigan, confessed to the crimes and told detectives he beat both murder victims with a mallet and raped the young woman.

Jones is being held in the Lake County Jail on no bond.

Unincorporated Leesburg, Aug. 31

A man reported missing Wednesday was found dead in Marion County and a man known as “Maniac” is responsible, according to LCSO.

Casey Dean’s body was found near the home of a friend of Matthew “Maniac” Luke Allen, 26, and a woman Allen met on the dating app “Plenty of Fish,” told LCSO Allen shot him and disposed of his body, according to an arrest affidavit.

She told deputies Allen was standing across from Dean Sunday afternoon yelling about a gun on a coffee table that was believed to be inoperable. She said she heard Allen yell, “Why would you pull a gun on people that doesn’t work?” followed by a gunshot. Dean succumbed to his neck wound on a couch and Allen and another man are alleged to have rolled Dean’s body up in a rug and put him in the back of a Dodge Ram. Allen then forced the unidentified woman to help him dispose of the body. Two children also witnessed the killing.

The pair stayed at an undisclosed location and the woman, who feared Allen was going to kill her, convinced him to let her go home Wednesday to retrieve clothes. Allen, who allegedly planned on fleeing the state Thursday, allowed to woman to leave in a borrowed car. She dumped the car at a Marion County convenience store and escaped by calling a friend to come get her.

When she arrived home, she cooperated with LCSO and gave them information on the killing and where Allen dumped the body.

Allen was picked up in Marion County on outstanding Sumter County warrants and arrested for manslaughter, kidnapping. tampering with evidence, unlawful transportation of human remains, grand theft auto and child neglect. He is being held in the Marion County Jail on no bond.

ORMOND BEACH, Florida—The female person of interest in last week’s double homicide in Altoona died Friday, just a day after the slayings, according to Ormond Beach Police Department.

Samantha Butler, age unknown, and Roger Myles Gilbert, 35, fled a traffic stop in Ormond Beach shortly before noon Friday and crashed in an Ormond Beach KFC parking lot. Butler was found dead in the white Volvo and Gilbert fled on foot and was captured in a nearby store.

OBPD responded to the 1400 block of Granada Boulevard on a report of a vehicle with a bullet hole in it around 10 a.m. The vehicle was spotted nearly two hours after the initial call and OBPD attempted to stop the Volvo with Alabama tags, according to a press release from OBPD.

The car fled and crashed in the parking lot of KFC, 294 West Granada Boulevard. Gilbert fled on foot and Butler was found in the car unresponsive and pronounced dead on the scene by Ormond Beach Fire Rescue.

“We do not believe Samantha Butler’s death is a result of injuries sustained in the crash,” OBPD said in a press release.

Altoona Man Arrested Less than 10 Minutes After Robbing Marion County Bank, Police Say

BELLEVIEW, Florida—Crime did not pay for an Altoona man Monday after he was arrested less than 10 minutes after allegedly robbing a Belleview bank, according to Belleview Police Department (BPD) in Marion County.

BPD responded to Wells Fargo, 5407 Southeast 11th Street Monday on a report of a bomb threat; when they arrived, they were notified the bank had been robbed by a white male seen leaving on foot.

A BPD corporal searched the area and located John Lloyd Henderson-Winfield, 21, of Altoona. Henderson-Winfield refused to stop, fled again on foot, and was quickly found behind a home on Southeast 55th Avenue, BPD said.

Bank employees told BPD Henderson-Winfield asked for money and said the bank was surrounded by bombs, a statement found to be untrue after the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad responded and determined the building was clear.

Henderson-Winfield agreed to speak with a BPD detective, and he admitted he robbed the bank and mentioned a bomb, BPD said.

Henderson-Winfield was arrested for robbery, false report of a deadly explosive, grand theft and resisting arrest. He is being held in the Marion County Jail; his bond information was not available at press time.

Altoona Man Flees LCSO in Stolen Truck, Apprehended by K9

ALTOONA, Florida—A man released from prison just three months ago is back behind bars after fleeing from a Lake County Sheriff’s Office detective in a stolen truck Tuesday, according to an arrest affidavit.

An LCSO detective went to a home on Lake King Road in Altoona Tuesday morning to interview Dennis James Imhoff, 36, about his involvement in a vehicle burglary. When the detective arrived, Imhoff was unloading items from a white Chevy truck, later determined to be stolen, the affidavit states.

The detective identified himself and Imhoff got in the truck and backed through the yard in a “reckless manner,” ran a stop sign at Rea Way and State Road 19 and then traveled to County Road 42. LCSO attempted to stop Imhoff, and he fled northbound on Big Oak Road.

The detective received information Imhoff entered a driveway on East Altoona Road, and he located the truck, covered with a tarp, behind the home. The detective then discovered the truck was stolen from Umatilla on Monday, the affidavit states.

LCSO canvassed the area from 10:50 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday and failed to find Imhoff. Shortly after 3:30 p.m. LCSO received a call Imhoff was around County Road 42, and he was located by a K9 deputy and its handler. Imhoff was instructed to stop running and he failed to, and K9 Murphy was deployed and apprehended Imhoff.

Imhoff was transported to AdventHealth Waterman in Tavares for treatment of a dog bite and medically cleared, according to the affidavit. He was arrested for grand theft auto, fleeing and eluding and resisting without violence.

Imhoff is currently on probation and suspected in more than six grand theft auto cases in Marion County and Volusia County. He is being held in the Lake County Jail on no bond.

Roommate Arrested in Death of Altoona Man who Suffered before Dying

TAVARES, Florida—A man already in the Lake County Jail for moving a man’s body and covering it with a sheet and couch cushions has been charged in his death, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Jesse “Cracker” Franklin Hill, 42, was arrested May 27 on a charge of tampering with evidence and is now facing a manslaughter charge, in the death of his roommate, Ernie Wayne Wilburn, 44, in Altoona in May.

On May 4, Hill made two “cryptic” emergency calls to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and deputies responded to 19331 East Altoona Road and found Wilburn covered in a sheet with cushions stacked on top of him and a puncture wound in his left rib area, according to the affidavit. LCSO also found a bloodstain indicating he was moved.

When LCSO read a search warrant for the property aloud, Hill reportedly asked if a specific area to the west side of the house was included, and he was informed it was; a Ruger .22 high-velocity air rifle was found in the same area.

An autopsy of Wilburn later found a .22 caliber pellet-style projectile in his lung, along with a significant blood clot in his chest cavity that indicated Wilburn “suffered for a significant time prior to his death,” the affidavit states.

Hill fled the residence during the investigation, according to the affidavit, later telling multiple sources he was “on the run” and “wanted for murder.”

LCSO caught up to Hill at a home in Eustis May 27 and he was arrested for tampering with evidence. He was held at the Lake County Jail on no bond until he was charged with manslaughter Friday; he is still being held on no bond on both charges.

A witness told LCSO Hill shot Wilburn with the air rifle because he was annoyed with him. The witness said Wilburn was outside a window yelling because he did not have a key and Hill shot him through the window. Hill told witnesses he did not believe the pellet gun would kill Wilburn, he just wanted him to go away.

Woman Stabs 2 People Sunday, Both Victims Airlifted

ALTOONA, Florida—A woman who told Lake County Sheriff’s Office detective she found the largest knife she could and “I never said it was self-defense” was arrested Mother’s Day for two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after stabbing two people, according to an arrest affidavit.

Shortly after 3:15 p.m. Sunday, LCSO responded to 20304 Green Wing Road in reference to a stabbing and found a large butcher knife with a blue handle, blood, and two victims; a female with a stab wound to her back and a man with a stab would to his left bicep, according to the affidavit. The woman was airlifted to Central Florida Regional Medical Center in Sanford and the man was airlifted to Ocala Regional Medical Center in Ocala for treatment.

LCSO detectives responded to the scene and to both hospitals to interview the involved parties and on scene found multiple areas of blood near a hot tub in the yard. A witness told LCSO she made prior arrangements with her daughter, Cheyenne Dawn Kee, 23, to retrieve the hot tub that was left at the home and earlier that day she requested the two stabbing victims to help her move the hot tub.

The two victims were loading the hot tub on a trailer when Kee showed up and was “visibly upset, shaking and yelling,” and asking why people were taking her hot tub, the affidavit states.

Kee’s mother told her the victims were just there to help and Kee began arguing with the female victim and her mother stepped in to separate them. Kee’s mother then got in her vehicle to leave, and she heard the male victim yell that he was bleeding. She rendered aid to the man and said he had a “significant” amount of blood coming from his bicep, the affidavit states.

Kee was interviewed by detectives and said she went inside the allow the pair the get the hot tub and while she was inside, she heard her mother and the female victim, “talking about her.” She went outside and argued with her mother and the woman, and her shirt was ripped during the altercation, and she claimed her mother punched her. Kee said she went inside to change and retrieved the largest knife she could find, went outside and stabbed the female victim in the back while she was loading to hot tub. The male victim tried to help the woman and Kee stabbed him too, according to the affidavit.

Kee acknowledged neither victim threatened her and reportedly said, “I never said it was self-defense.”

Kee was taken into custody and arrested for two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon; she is being held in the Lake County Jail on $20,000 bond.
