Person of Interest In Altoona Double Homicide Booked Into the Volusia County Jail

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida—A person of interest in the killings of two Lake County men has been booked into the Volusia County Jail and is being held on no bond.

Roger Myles Gilbert, 35 of Alabama, was arrested by Ormond Beach Police Department Friday “after an encounter with Ormond Beach police officers,” Lake County Sheriff’s Office Lt. John Herrell said early Friday evening.

Gilbert was arrested on charges of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, grand theft of a firearm, carrying a concealed firearm and resisting an officer without violence, according to Volusia County Corrections online booking records.

Inside Lake is working to confirm the details of Gilbert’s “encounter” with OBPD, but an email to the agency was still unanswered late Friday night. A female person of interest was also involved in the encounter, but her name and status are unclear.

Gilbert is a person of interest in the deaths of David Thomas Mikell, 34 of Umatilla, and Shane Eugene Clements, 41, of Altoona. The two men were found dead from apparent gunshot wounds after Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 45918 Pennsylvania Road, Altoona around 9 p.m. Thursday night, Herrell said. Gilbert has not been arrested in connection to the deaths at this time.
