LCSO Treating Suspicious Death in Altoona as a Homicide

ALTOONA, Florida—The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspicious death it is treating as a homicide, according to LCSO Lt. John Herrell.

LCSO responded to 19331 East Altoona Road on a report of a dead man Wednesday and upon arrival found Ernie Wayne Wilburn, 44, deceased. Witnesses failed to provide an explanation as to what happened to Wilburn, Herrell said in a press release.

The circumstances surrounding Wilburn’s death are “suspicious,” and his cause of death is not being released at this time, according to LCSO detectives.

Search Underway at Alexander Springs for Missing Man

ALTOONA, Florida—The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Forest Service are working together searching for a man who went missing on a canoe trip Easter Sunday.

Davidson Anjab, 39, was canoeing with two men Sunday afternoon when the canoe overturned; two of the men got back into the canoe, but Anjab was unable to, LCSO Lt. John Herrell said. The man swam back to shore and yelled he would walk back and meet his party, but he never made it.

The U.S. Forest Service has closed the day-use area of Alexander Springs because it is being used as a staging area for the search, according to a Facebook post. Campers with reservations will be allowed entry to the camping area on a case-by-case basis.

LCSO’s Marine Patrol Unit, Eagle 1(helicopter,) mounted posse, K9 deputies and other personnel are diligently searching for the man, Herrell said.
