Murder suspect returned to Lake County more than a year after woman’s death

TAVARES, Fla. — The man accused of killing his sister-in-law last year is back in Lake County and in the custody of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Shahidul Islam, 43, was extradited from federal custody to Lake County Sunday, LCSO Sgt. Jim Vachon said. He is being held on no bond in the Lake County Jail.

LCSO detectives obtained an arrest warrant more than a year ago after Monica Islam, 44, was found murdered in unincorporated Mount Dora after being reported missing from Eustis. She was found shot to death near Scenic Hills Drive and Wolf Branch Road on May 2, 2025.

Investigators later linked Shahidul Islam to the killing through evidence found in his vehicle, including a shattered window, a projectile and bloodstains, according to the sheriff’s office.

During the investigation, detectives learned Monica Islam had been the victim of a domestic violence incident involving her husband, Rashedul Islam, and Shahidul Islam in December 2024, LCSO Capt. John Herrell said in a 2025 press release.

In that incident, Rashedul Islam allegedly struck his wife and stole jewelry and paperwork related to property in Bangladesh. Shahidul Islam allegedly pointed a gun at his sister-in-law and told her not to call 911, Herrell said. The incident was reported to Eustis Police Department, but Rashedul Islam fled the country before he could be arrested.

Detectives also learned Shahidul Islam had previously been deported and was wanted on a federal immigration warrant for illegally reentering the United States, Herrell said.

Using information from license plate readers, detectives connected Shahidul Islam to a home in Sanford and later determined he had fled to New York in a rental car. U.S. Marshals located him and took him into custody on the federal immigration warrant.

He remained in federal custody until he was extradited to Lake County on Sunday to face the murder charge
