TAVARES, Fla. — The Lake Amateur Radio Association will host its annual Field Day event from 2 p.m. Saturday, June 27, through 2 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at the Lake Technical College Institute of Public Safety Range Campus, 13000 Frankies Road in Tavares.
The public is invited to attend the event, which serves as amateur radio’s annual open house and emergency preparedness exercise. LARA and several local agencies will showcase mobile command and communications vehicles while amateur radio operators attempt to contact as many stations as possible during the 24-hour event.
More than 40,000 amateur radio operators, commonly known as “hams,” are expected to participate in Field Day events across North America. The annual event, which dates back to 1933, combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach and technical skills.
The Lake Amateur Radio Association serves residents throughout Lake County and its municipalities. Established in 1952 by a group of local amateur radio operators, the organization has grown to more than 150 members and is recognized as one of the top-performing amateur radio clubs in Florida and North America.
According to LARA, the club consistently earns top honors in statewide and national competitions. Its radio systems enable worldwide communications and play an important role in emergency preparedness and public service.
