EUSTIS, Fla. — A dispute between two groups of teenagers at Carver Park escalated into two shootings less than two hours apart Thursday night, resulting in the arrests of two suspects and more charges are expected, according to Eustis police.
Malachi Aiden Hughes, 15, and Jordan Larry Hayes, 18, were arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into an occupied dwelling following shootings at 701 E. Hazzard Ave. and 1502 E. Lakeview Ave.
No one was injured in either shooting.
According to arrest affidavits, witnesses told investigators the conflict began earlier Thursday at Carver Park, where members of the two groups exchanged threats. Detectives allege the suspects later obtained firearms from the residence on Lakeview Avenue before returning to carry out the first shooting on Hazzard Avenue.
Police say a white Nissan passenger car was used in the Hazzard Avenue shooting, while a white Chevrolet Camaro was also involved. Officers later stopped the Camaro and detained three female juveniles who provided information to investigators.
While officers were investigating the Hazzard Avenue shooting, a second shooting occurred at the residence on Lakeview Avenue. Detectives recovered approximately 30 spent 9mm shell casings from the scene.
Investigators later executed a search warrant and recovered an AR-15-style rifle, a mounted gun laser and ammunition, according to Eustis Police Chief Craig Capri.
Police have identified all suspects involved, Capri said, and expect additional arrests and charges as the investigation continues.
