Man Ejected and Killed in Friday Night Turnpike Crash

LAKE COUNTY, Florida—A Delray Beach man was killed Saturday night on Florida’s Turnpike after the SUV he was driving struck a tractor-trailer, a concrete barrier and the tractor-trailer again, causing the SUV to overturn and eject him, according to the Florida Highway Patrol

The 44-year-old Delray Beach man was driving a BMW X3 shortly before 10 p.m. Friday southbound on Florida’s Turnpike near mile marker 276 when he made an improper lane change, FHP Lt. Tara Crescenzi said in a press release.

The right side of the BMW struck the left front of a tractor-trailer and the Delray Beach man overcorrected, ran off the roadway and struck a concrete barrier, Crescenzi said. The BMW then reentered the path of the tractor-trailer and the left rear of the BMW collided with the front right of the tractor-trailer.

The impact caused the BMW to overturn, ejecting the Delray Beach man, killing him. His passengers, a 39-year-old woman and an 8-year-old boy, both of Delray Beach, suffered minor injuries and were transported to South Lake Hospital. The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 47-year-old man of Orlando, was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
