Tavares Police: Man in Custody After Firing Shots in Tavares Backyard

TAVARES, Florida—A man is in custody after he fired shots in the backyard of a home on Pineway Street, according to Tavares Police Department Public Information Officer Courtney Sullivan.

TPD responded to the 1000 block of Pineway Street around 7 p.m. Friday night on a report of shots fired, Sullivan told Inside Lake. Officers arrived and found the shooting occurred in the backyard of a home and after a foot pursuit, took Craig Austin Campbell, 31, of Weirsdale into custody. No one was injured in the shooting. Campbell complained he had a medical issue and was transported to AdventHealth Waterman in Tavares and will be booked into the Lake County Jail after he is medically cleared, Sullivan said.

Campbell is facing several charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, armed burglary to an occupied dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His booking information, including bond, was not available at press time. TPD is still on scene investigating the shooting and is awaiting crime scene investigators to arrive on scene.

According to Lake County Sheriff’s Office online booking records, Campbell was picked up on a warrant in January for grand theft, burglary and petit theft. He was in custody for three days before being released on $9,000 bond.
