Thief Nabbed After Leesburg Resident Spots Her Walking Off with Groceries

LEESBURG, Florida—A stolen grocery bag containing frozen cauliflower, juice and muffins landed a Leesburg woman in jail Tuesday, according to an arrest affidavit.

The victim called Leesburg Police Department and said she arrived home around 7:20 p.m. to find April Lee Evans, 37, walking off her front porch with groceries that had just been delivered.

The victim parked her car and spotted Evans, along with an unidentified male, walking east on Main Street carrying her groceries. The victim confronted the pair, and they dropped most of the groceries and continued walking, turning on Moss Street, the same street Evans lives on, according to the affidavit.

The victim described Evans to police and told them she was missing at least a 6-pack of juice and a pack of muffins. LPD searched the area and found Evans, who matched the victim’s description, and she told them “Steve” gave the items to her before walking off. Evans said the stolen groceries were in her bag and she was found with three packages of frozen cauliflower, a 6-pack of Ocean Spray juice, and a box of chocolate chip muffins.

Evans was taken into custody and upon searching her and her backpack, officers found 10 used syringes, a cut straw, a metal spoon digital scale, and a baggie, all with methamphetamine residue.

Evans was arrested for petit theft, burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia; she is being held at the Lake County Jail on $7,000 bond.
