2 Store Employees at Different Locations Busted for Fraud and Theft, Police Say

EUSTIS, Florida—Two employees of the same company, but separate locations, are facing grand theft and scheme to defraud charges after their managers busted them stealing this week.

On Tuesday, Eustis Police Department responded to Circle K, 2754 East Orange Avenue, at the corner of Abrams Road after the manager reported she caught an employee stealing on video.

After receiving alerts, the register had been opened without a transaction occurring, the manager began reviewing surveillance and saw Kailyn Marie Kleinmann, 18, crumple money and put it in her shoe or bra, according to the arrest affidavit.

The manager also found that Kleinmann, who had only been employed at the store for a few weeks, had been ringing lottery tickets up, deleting the transaction and then pocketing the cash from the transaction. The manager found that the store lost $1,411 in lottery ticket sales just on July 17, the affidavit states.

On July 20, Kleinmann, of Eustis, was seen giving away and discounting cigarettes, in addition to taking another $296 in lottery sales. In total, the store lost $1,857.

EPD returned to the store Monday afternoon when Kleinmann came to work, and she agreed to speak with officers. She admitted she took around $2,000 and said she needed it to pay for motel rooms. Kleinmann was arrested for grand theft and scheme to defraud. She was transported to the Lake County Jail, where she was released on $2,000 bond.

On Wednesday, EPD responded to another Circle location, less than 2 miles away in reference to a theft. The manager of the store located at 19516 State Road 44, told EPD she was reviewing video surveillance from June when she was on vacation, because the count came up short. Upon reviewing the video, she spotted employee Bryan Martinez Cruz, 30, of Orlando, taking money to the vault, but instead of dropping it, he put it in his pocket, according to the arrest affidavit. On Monday, Cruz was captured on video ringing up a $50 lottery ticket, cashing it out for $100 and taking a total of $320 from the register. The total amount from all the thefts was $1,043, the affidavit states.

Police questioned Cruz, who worked at the store around four months, and he admitted the thefts and said he needed it for blood pressure medication. Cruz was arrested for grand theft and scheme to defraud and transported to LCJ, where he is being held on $2,000 bond.

Orange County Gang Unit Tracks Suspected Thieves to Eustis

EUSTIS, Florida— Two Orange County teenagers wanted in connection with armed burglaries and a stolen SUV that was used in an Orange County drive-by shooting were taken into custody Thursday after the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Gang Unit tracked them to Eustis Thursday.

The OCSO Gang Unit responded to a drive-by shooting in the early morning hours Thursday and a witness identified the vehicle involved in the shooting as a white Ford Explorer, according to an arrest affidavit.

Detectives with the OCSO Gang Unit discovered OCSO patrol units responded to a complaint the day before in reference to a stolen white Ford Explorer that was taken while two people, identified as Keyuon Daquan Newsome, 19, and X’Zavion Malik Jordon, 16, both documented gang members, were captured on video surveillance committing vehicle burglaries, according to the affidavit.

A wallet containing cash and debit cards was in the vehicle and the cards were used at 7-Eleven, 5570 North Orange Blossom Trail, in the Rosemont area of Orlando Wednesday. Newsome, of Apopka, and Jordon, of Orlando, were again captured on video surveillance purchasing items with the stolen cards and driving a Ford Sports Trac.

OCSO Gang Unit detectives determined the Ford belonged to Newsome’s mother and is registered to her address on Glover Street in Eustis. They conducted surveillance on the Ford and spotted Newsome and Jordon exiting an apartment at 101 Glover Street and walking back and forth to the Ford, the affidavit states.

Detectives later determined the duo were recording an Instagram live video while smoking marijuana and pointing guns at the camera.

The OCSO Gang Unit coordinated with Eustis Police Department, and they were positively identified on while on the rear patio; they saw law enforcement officers and ran into the apartment through a rear sliding glass door. They left the door open, and Newsome was observed attempting to conceal an item under a blanket.

Officers and deputies surrounded the apartment and after callouts, Newsome and Jordon exited the residence and were taken into custody while a search warrant was secured for the apartment. Upon searching the apartment, two guns—the same guns the pair were holding in their Instagram live video—were found to be stolen out of Apopka earlier this year.

Newsome and Jordon were arrested for possession of a firearm by a delinquent and grand theft of a firearm by EPD, according to an EPD detective. Newsome is facing armed burglary and grand theft of a firearm charges by OCSO and is being held in LCJ on no bond. Jordon is also facing an armed burglary charge in Orange County and was turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Explosive Devices, Anti-Semitic Literature and “Copious” Amounts of Guns and Ammunition Found In Royal Trails Home

EUSTIS, Florida—A Eustis man is facing 10 serious charges after the Lake County Sheriff’s Office found numerous homemade bombs in his home in Royal Trails in unincorporated Lake County Saturday.

On Friday, LCSO received a tip from a witness who said Markus Fricke, 55, had built several devices recently with the intent of “blowing up the residence” and was waiting for a shipment of chemicals to finish, according to an arrest affidavit.

The witness saw a shipment arrive marked “Ammonium Nitrate” weighing about 50 pounds; The shipment, along with statements made by Fricke scared the witness and she fled the home at 30927 Tulip Avenue and called law enforcement.

Ammonium Nitrate, a fertilizer, was one of the main components used in the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing.

The witness met with LCSO and said Fricke had been making bombs and booby traps and he was planning to blow the entire street up, including himself and his home. She drew deputies a map showing where Fricke kept chemicals and devices, the affidavit states..

Fricke, who has “an extensive history of unusual and concerning behavior” believes people live in his attic and trespass on his lawn, and law enforcement has responded to his home numerous times in the last few years.

While LCSO was interviewing the witness, Fricke left his home, and he was stopped by deputies who found a homemade device on his floorboard. The device, a metal tube with a 12-gauge shotgun shell, was designed to trigger via spring tension activated by a trip wire. The device was later determined to be a destructive device by the LCSO Hazardous Device Team.

Fricke was Baker Acted and LCSO secured a search warrant for his home and due to the witness advising the home may be booby-trapped, the LCSO HDT utilized a robot to make entry. Four destructive devices were found, and all designed to activate by a tripwire. A fuel bomb that was fashioned to act as a flammable grenade was also found.

A lot of fuel, materials, and tools were discovered in addition to “copious amounts” of firearms, including a short-barreled shotgun and ammunition,” and a “significant amount” of anti-Semitic literature, the affidavit states. It is unknown if Fricke had a specific target.

Neighbors spoke with LCSO and said they heard and saw Fricke detonate devices on his property, one explosion so violent last week, it shook the neighbor’s home.

Fricke was arrested Monday, following his Baker Act. He is facing six counts of making or possessing a destructive device, one count of threat to discharge a destructive device, carrying a concealed firearm and possession of a short-barreled shotgun. He is being held in LCJ on no bond.

Tavares Police Train for the Worst Case Scenario

TAVARES, Florida—While a lot of people are out enjoying the Florida summer, law enforcement agencies around Lake County have been training and preparing for the “what if?”

Tavares Police Department invited Inside Lake to join them in active shooter training this week at Tavares Elementary School. They trained two days, for eight hours each, in the blazing July sun.

“We do this once a year,” TPD Lt. Sarah Coursey said Thursday, “Each sworn officer goes through the training.”

TPD invited other local agencies to join them in the training, including Astatula Police Department, Eustis Police Department, Howey-in-the-Hills Police Department and Mount Dora Police Department. Lake County Schools Supervisor of Safety and Security Joseph Mabry also participated, and on Thursday, he portrayed the “bad guy” during several scenarios.

Mabry, who is also a school guardian, told Inside Lake, the safety of the children is paramount, “It’s the most important thing we do,” he said. “We want our parents to feel safe; ultimately, it’s our responsibility.”

Coursey said TPD invited other local agencies to join them because if they were faced with an active shooter situation, many different law enforcement agencies would not hesitate to go to the scene and help, she said.

“They would all respond,” Coursey said. “It just goes to show what kind of law enforcement we have in Lake County.”

Officers from MDPD participated in the scenarios and an EPD captain stopped by during training, Coursey said. Eustis Police Department and Leesburg Police Department also held their own active shooter trainings this month.

Led by TPD firearms instructors Sgt. Jason Mahaney and Officer Ben Carter, officers participated in the scenarios to prepare for multiple situations that could arise. Mahaney and Carter critiqued each officer’s response; telling each one what they did right, and what they did wrong.

“We’re not reinventing the wheel,” Mahaney said. “When it comes to stuff like this, there is no absolute. Any time we can change our view of certain things, we can improve. Nobody is going to get it right every time.”

Mahaney, who portrayed the active shooter for most of Thursday, explained what they teach officers to look for; stimuli and indicators to assess the situation immediately. Stimuli can be many things, like screams or the sound of shots and an indicator could be shell casings.

“In the presence of those indicators, you can at least get a path (to the shooter,)” he said.

Carter, a former Navy combat medic, watched officers as they entered the school, sometimes just a single officer, and some in groups. Officers faced different issues as they entered and made their way through the school. The issues were discussed, and solutions were created to prevent those issues from happening in an actual situation.

Sarah Coursey listen in. Officers participated in different scenarios this week and were critiqued by TPD firearms instructors Mahaney and Officer Ben Carter. PHOTO: Marilyn M. Aciego/Inside Lake

Inside Lake is not providing tactical details about the scenarios in this story to ensure the safety of officers.

“We have to put ourselves in a position for the best possible outcome,” Carter explained.

Coursey, who was recently appointed TPD chief and assumes the position next month, said this training is one of the most important things they do each year.

“The large majority of us (TPD) are parents, it’s our promise to Lake County that we are going to protect your children and ours.”

EPD Nabs Accused Vehicle Burglar Less than an Hour After his Alleged Crime

EUSTIS, Florida—An accused vehicle burglar is behind bars after he was caught on video entering one vehicle and attempting to enter a second one, according to an arrest affidavit.

Eustis Police responded to Blue Lake Estates off State Road 44 after a victim reported a possible vehicle burglary shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday. The victim allowed police to view video surveillance from his home that showed a man entering a vehicle and attempting to enter a second one, according to the affidavit.

About an hour later, EPD found Damon Cornelius Evans, 33, of Eustis, walking about a mile away from the neighborhood and identified him as the culprit. According to Evans’ online jail booking records, he lives in Blue Lake Estates on a different street, but he told police he is homeless.

Officers searched Evans and found a pair of Coach sunglasses in a case and a $100 bill. The items were taken into evidence and Evans was arrested for burglary to a conveyance. He was transported to the Lake County Jail, where he is being held on $2,000 bond.

Evans was arrested earlier this year for grand theft, domestic battery and criminal mischief following an altercation with an ex-girlfriend. The charges were later dropped.

Blue Lake Estates has been hit with vehicle burglars several times this year; EPD has stepped up patrols in the area and made several arrests in the last few months.

Roommate Arrested in Death of Altoona Man who Suffered before Dying

TAVARES, Florida—A man already in the Lake County Jail for moving a man’s body and covering it with a sheet and couch cushions has been charged in his death, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Jesse “Cracker” Franklin Hill, 42, was arrested May 27 on a charge of tampering with evidence and is now facing a manslaughter charge, in the death of his roommate, Ernie Wayne Wilburn, 44, in Altoona in May.

On May 4, Hill made two “cryptic” emergency calls to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and deputies responded to 19331 East Altoona Road and found Wilburn covered in a sheet with cushions stacked on top of him and a puncture wound in his left rib area, according to the affidavit. LCSO also found a bloodstain indicating he was moved.

When LCSO read a search warrant for the property aloud, Hill reportedly asked if a specific area to the west side of the house was included, and he was informed it was; a Ruger .22 high-velocity air rifle was found in the same area.

An autopsy of Wilburn later found a .22 caliber pellet-style projectile in his lung, along with a significant blood clot in his chest cavity that indicated Wilburn “suffered for a significant time prior to his death,” the affidavit states.

Hill fled the residence during the investigation, according to the affidavit, later telling multiple sources he was “on the run” and “wanted for murder.”

LCSO caught up to Hill at a home in Eustis May 27 and he was arrested for tampering with evidence. He was held at the Lake County Jail on no bond until he was charged with manslaughter Friday; he is still being held on no bond on both charges.

A witness told LCSO Hill shot Wilburn with the air rifle because he was annoyed with him. The witness said Wilburn was outside a window yelling because he did not have a key and Hill shot him through the window. Hill told witnesses he did not believe the pellet gun would kill Wilburn, he just wanted him to go away.

Uniformed Apopka Police Officer Driving Marked Patrol Car Arrested for DUI, Blew Nearly 5 Times the Legal Limit, Police Say

EUSTIS, Florida—An Apopka Police officer is on administrative leave with pay after being arrested for DUI in his marked patrol car, in full uniform and blowing nearly five times the legal limit on Independence Day.

Oscar Mayorga, a 5-year veteran of APD, was assigned to the patrol division and was scheduled to work Monday, according to a statement released by APD Sgt. Kim Walsh.

Just after 6 p.m. Monday, Eustis Police received a report of a reckless driver from a witness who said a marked Apopka Police car was unable to maintain its lane near U.S. Highway 441 and Donnelly Street in Mount Dora and was headed into Eustis.

EPD pulled the police car over near on South Street, near South Mary Street and identified the driver as Oscar Mayorga, who was in full uniform, according to the report. Mayorga, who had an open beer in his center cupholder, told the EPD officer he was on his way to work, while slurring his speech, according to a report.

The officer asked Mayorga if he needed medical attention and he reportedly said he is prone to having seizures and did not feel well. An officer asked if he had anything to drink and Mayorga, who smelled of alcohol, said he had taken three Benadryl, according to the report.

EPD asked Mayorga to step out of the vehicle and he “staggered out and had to use his door for support,” the report states. EPD disarmed Mayorga, as he was in full uniform, and he was unable to maintain his balance as he walked to a nearby sidewalk.

EPD requested Lake EMS respond to the scene and Mayorga refused to be transported and told Lake EMS he drank three tall boys (24 ounce cans of beer.) EPD read Mayorga his rights and asked him again if he had been drinking and Mayorga said he drank three tall boys of Modelo beer a “few hours” ago. The officer asked Mayorga if he called in to work and what Apopka Police Department’s policy is concerning drinking before work. He said there is supposed to be at least a six-hour time difference between drinking and going to work, according to the report.

Mayorga refused to perform field sobriety exercises and he was transported to EPD where he gave two breath samples, one with a reading of .391 and the second with a reading of .385—nearly five times the legal limit.

Mayorga was arrested for DUI and transported to the Lake County Jail and an APD sergeant responded to the scene for Mayorga’s patrol car and gear. Mayorga was released from LCJ Tuesday morning on $1,000 bond.
