CLERMONT, Fla. — A 31-year-old Haines City man was killed early Saturday after a witness told investigators he walked into a lane on U.S. Highway 27 and laid down in the path of a car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Just before 6:40 a.m., a 69-year-old Clermont man was driving a 2015 Kia Forte northbound on U.S. Highway 27, south of Cagan Crossings Boulevard. According to FHP, a witness said the pedestrian was walking in the left-turn lane before entering the northbound inside lane and lying down in the path of the Kia.
The undercarriage of the Kia struck the pedestrian, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver was not injured and remained at the scene, FHP said.
The northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 27 were closed Saturday morning.
The crash remains under investigation.
