LEESBURG, Fla.— Leesburg Police Department is investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian and closed the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 27 for three hours Friday night.
Around 7 p.m., LPD responded to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian on U.S. Highway 27 and County Road 48, according to LPD Lt. Shannon Walsh.
A white 2016 van driven by Ryan Surjan, 50, of Orlando, was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 27 when it struck a Leesburg man attempting to cross the roadway, a preliminary investigation determined.
“The pedestrian, a 53-year-old male from Leesburg, sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene despite life-saving efforts by Lake County Fire Rescue,” Walsh said in an email.
The man’s name hasn’t been released, pending notification of next of kin.
