FHP continues to investigate Orange County hit-and-run crash that killed Leesburg man

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.—The car believed to be involved in an Orange County hit-and-crash that killed a Leesburg man Monday night is in the custody of the Florida Highway Patrol, troopers said Saturday.

A 36-year-old Orlando man was driving a 2003 Honda Accord eastbound in the center lane of Silver Star Road near Le Harve Boulevard when he struck a 33-year-old Leesburg man who was walking in the eastbound lanes around 11:15 p.m., FHP said. The Leesburg man was not in a marked crosswalk.

The Orlando man stopped, and while he was assisting the Leesburg man, they were both struck by a 2024 Chevrolet Malibu. Witnesses told FHP the Malibu’s driver exited the car, checked the damage and fled the scene in the Malibu.

The Leesburg man was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center and pronounced deceased. The Orlando man suffered minor injuries and was not transported, FHP said.

On Tuesday, the driver of the Malibu, a 27-year-old Orlando woman, contacted law enforcement and said she had been involved in a crash the night before on Silver Star Road and may have ran something over, FHP said. Investigators also spoke with the passenger in the Malibu, a 25-year-old Orlando woman. They observed damage to the Malibu consistent with the crash and took it into evidence.

The crash remains under investigation as troopers continue to gather more evidence. FHP said.
