School bus crash in Umatilla sends driver to the hospital, children uninjured

UMATILLA, Fla.—A crash Thursday morning sent a Lake County Schools bus driver to the hospital, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

At 7:52 a.m. an LCS school bus transporting multiple children was westbound on County Road 44A east of Blanchester Court when a 2024 Chevy Silverado traveling eastbound veered into the westbound lane and struck the bus head-on, FHP Lt. Tara Crescenzi told Inside Lake. The school bus driver was transported to AdventHealth Waterman in Tavares with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevy, a 57-year-old Umatilla woman, was not injured.

Fourteen Umatilla Elementary School students were on the bus, LCS Communications director Sherri Owens said. “I’m not aware of any student injuries at this time,” she said.

The crash remains under investigation, according to Crescenzi.
