Trio, Including Mother, Charged in Infant Overdose Death

DeLAND, Florida—Three people have been charged in the May overdose death of a 4-month-old baby boy, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Lt. John Herrell.

LCSO responded to 42221 Dogwood Avenue in the DeLand area of unincorporated Lake County on a report of an unresponsive infant May 19. Logan Bixler, just 4 months old, was transported to AdventHealth DeLand where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives began investigating and found methamphetamine in the home on Dogwood Avenue, Herrell said in a press release. An autopsy and toxicology results revealed tiny Logan died from an accidental overdose of methamphetamine.

Through numerous interviews, detectives learned Logan’s mother, Jaden Colwell, 25, allowed two men, Robert Lee Walters, 42, and Corey Albert Mincey, 40, to smoke methamphetamine in her living room the night of Logan’s death. Mincey was arrested for manslaughter and Walters is on the run and believed to be in the Highland Lakes area in the eastern part of Lake County, Herrell said.

Colwell, Logan’s mother, will be charged through the State Attorney’s Office for aggravated manslaughter of a child. She is already facing charges in a similar death, Herrell said. In that case, Colwell is facing a charge of death caused by unlawful distribution of fentanyl in the overdose death of Craig McDuffie near Colwell’s neighborhood in July. Detectives say Colwell sold McDuffie the drugs that killed him.

Colwell is being held in the Lake County Jail on no bond and Mincey is being held on $30,000 bond. If you have information on Walters’ whereabouts, call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS.
