BREAKING NEWS: Tavares Police Release Body Cam Footage in NFL Player’s Arrest

Publisher’s note: The following video contains explicit language.

TAVARES, Florida—Body cam footage has been released in the arrest of Jacksonville Jaguars’ player Lerentee’ Zavonne McCray, 31.

Tavares Police Department released the footage Wednesday morning in the Jan. 16 arrest of McCray.  The video shows McCray pulling into the parking lot 7-Eleven at the corner of U.S. Highway 441 and Banning Beach Road in Tavares playing very loud music. Officers from TPD were arresting an individual for drug possession following a traffic stop and were being assisted by a sergeant from Astatula Police Department, according to a TPD report.

In the video, McCray attempts to put gas in a TPD patrol car and says, “I just need you to take care of my son.” An officer tries to stop him, and he struggles with McCray over the gas nozzle. McCray then asks the officer to take him home and says, “I thought I seen something I didn’t see,” and the officer tells him to walk away.

McCray then went to the back of his truck and removed a child’s bicycle and placed it on the hood of the truck and began “talking in circles.” McCray then laid on the ground as if he wanted to be handcuffed, the officer noted in the report.

Earlier that morning, McCray, 31, fled from Fruitland Park Police Department when an officer attempted to pull him over for speeding, according to an arrest affidavit. An officer spotted a white Dodge Ram traveling on County Road 25 at a “high rate of speed” and utilized her radar to find the truck was going 88 mph. The officer attempted to stop the Ram at C.R. 25 and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard by activating her lights and sirens and the driver, later identified as McCray, put his left arm out of the window and flipped his middle finger at the officer, according to the affidavit.

About 15 minutes later after fleeing FPPD, McCray pulled into the gas station in Tavares and was eventually arrested.

McCray was transported to AdventHealth Waterman in Tavares, where he was arrested by FPPD after he was medically cleared. TPD conducted an inventory of McCray’s truck and found a small bag of marijuana and a Benelli SuperNova shotgun.

McCray is facing a charge of fleeing and eluding and was released from the Lake County Jail on $5,000 bond. McCray played for the University of Florida from 2008 to 2012 and has been a Jacksonville Jaguar since 2017.

NFL Player Flees Fruitland Park Police, Attempts To Pump Gas In Tavares Police Car, Taken To Hospital For Erratic Behavior

TAVARES, Florida—A Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end was arrested in Tavares early Sunday morning after fleeing Fruitland Park Police.

Lerentee’ Zavonne McCray, 31, fled from FPPD when an officer attempted to pull him over for speeding, according to an arrest affidavit.

The officer began to chase McCray and an FPPD sergeant joined in, reaching speeds up to 100 mph, the affidavit states. McCray was driving in “an extremely reckless manner,” swerving across all three southbound lanes of traffic and FPPD terminated the stop.

About 15 minutes later, McCray pulled into 7-Eleven at the corner of U.S. Highway 441 and Banning Beach Road in Tavares. Officers from Tavares Police Department were arresting an individual for drug possession following a traffic stop and were being assisted by a sergeant from Astatula Police Department, according to a TPD report.

McCray, who appeared to know the APD sergeant, gave him a fist bump and then retrieved his wallet. McCray then walked over to a TPD officer’s car, opened the fuel door and walked over to the pump attempting to buy some gas, according to the report. The officer told McCray that was not necessary and closed the fuel door. McCray opened the door again and inserted the fuel nozzle into the patrol car. The officer attempted to take the nozzle from McCray, and he forcefully grabbed the officer’s wrist, and the officer pushed him back, the report states.

McCray then went to the back of his truck and removed a child’s bicycle and placed it on the hood of the truck and began “talking in circles.” McCray then laid on the ground as if he wanted to be handcuffed, the officer noted in the report.

McCray was handcuffed due to his erratic behavior and was not making sense when he spoke. The TPD officer allowed McCray to lean on his knee as they spoke, and McCray fell asleep. Officer called Lake EMS to the scene and as McCray was placed on a stretcher, FPPD informed TPD they had charges for McCray due to him fleeing the earlier traffic stop.

McCray was transported to AdventHealth Waterman in Tavares, where he was arrested by FPPD after he was medically cleared. TPD conducted an inventory of McCray’s truck and found a small bag of marijuana and a Benelli SuperNova shotgun.

McCray is facing a charge of fleeing and eluding he was released from the Lake County Jail on $5,000 bond.  McCray played for the University of Florida from 2008 to 2012 and has been a Jacksonville Jaguar since 2017.

Family Of Murdered Mom Celebrates Her Birthday With Balloon Release Monday

EUSTIS, Florida—Melissa Nease would have turned 30 Monday.

Instead of celebrating this milestone birthday, Nease’ children and their father Shane Jenkins, her big sister Amy Harris, her mom Lisa Nease, best friend Abby Henderson and more than three dozen loved ones, sang “Happy Birthday” and released more than 100 balloons at her gravesite at Greenwood Cemetery Monday afternoon, many wearing memorial pink—Nease’ favorite color—shirts.

Nease’ mom, had a special “#1” balloon to signify a long-running family joke. Nease always made cracks about being Lisa’s number one daughter, Harris said with a smile.

Several of Nease’ loved ones held back tears as they spoke about her to Inside Lake. Henderson, who was her best friend for four years, said they instantly became best friends when they met and went through a lot of ups and downs together. Monday was a way to honor Nease and her birthday, but she misses her terribly and wants justice for her friend.

“It’s not any kind of relief,” Henderson said. “It won’t bring the peace we’re waiting for.”

Nease will be remembered for heart, Henderson said. “She was always so loving to everybody.”

Nearly 10 months ago, Nease, 29, was found murdered in her secluded Ocklawaha home in Marion County the afternoon of Feb. 28, by a family friend.

The 2010 graduate of Tavares High School, was home alone while Jenkins and their three children were out of town when she was shot; Marion County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case. MCSO has released little information in the case—just two short video clips showing two assailants running away from her home following the murder.

Jenkins choked back tears as he spoke to Inside Lake Monday night. He said he spends his time focused on his children; he shared two daughters and a son with Nease, and they visit her grave each week. Jenkins’ mom, Stacey Miller, passed away in 2019 and Nease is buried right next to her.

He tries to keep his children entertained and busy, “I do everything for them,” he said. “I’m with my kids 24/7.”

Jenkins theory on Nease’ murder is a burglary gone bad. He thinks the perpetrators believed the whole family was out of town and Nease surprised them and they killed her.

“It eats at me every day,” he said. “We want this person caught more than anybody.’

Jenkins moved out of the home where the murder happened because it was just too hard for him. He had to clean up the home after her murder and the pain was obvious in his face as he spoke. “We moved out of there as soon as we could.”

Harris vows to never let up until her sister’s killers are caught.

“I’m not stopping,” Harris said. “Marion County needs to know, I’m coming.”

If you have information on the murder of Nease, call MCSO Det. Daniel Pinder at (352) 368-3508 or if you wish to remain anonymous, call Marion County Crime Stoppers at (352) 368-STOP (7867) and reference 21-20 in your call.

Tavares Police Officer And Infant Share Special Bond

TAVARES, Florida—Britney Ochoa has a lot to be grateful for this holiday season.

Last month, just before she was about to go to bed around 11 p.m., her mom’s instinct kicked in and she checked on her son Elias to find he was not breathing. Just 2 months old at the time, Elias had spent the beginning of his life in the hospital and mom had just recently brought him home.

Ochoa, 22, called 9-1-1 and some might say Elias’ guardian angel appeared in the form of Tavares Police Officer Teddy Pearl. Pearl arrived on scene to find Ochoa performing CPR on tiny Elias.

“He literally took over CPR for me,” Ochoa told Inside Lake. “I was in shock.”

Elias was born with holes in his heart and has undergone open heart surgery since the incident on Nov. 13, where his airway was described as “floppy.” He is deaf in one ear and suffers from a condition that makes his heart rate drop and oxygen levels go down causing him difficulty breathing, but that seems to be improving now, Ochoa said. He recently underwent a sleep study and it came back normal.

“He pulls himself out of those (episodes,)” she said.

Elias is still in the hospital, but Ochoa hopes to be bringing him back home soon. Big brother Sterling, 2, who has epilepsy, misses his little brother tremendously, Ochoa said, and cannot wait for him to come home. Sterling is not allowed to visit Elias in the hospital due to COVID-19 protocols, she said, but Elias got a special visit from Officer Pearl this week, Tavares Police Public Information Officer Courtney Sullivan told Inside Lake Friday.

“Officer Pearl has maintained contact with the family and visited the family on his day off. He has stated that this call in particular has impacted him, and he keeps in touch to check on the family,” Sullivan said.

Pearl’s recent hospital visit included a new toy for Elias, snuggles and a few photos. Pearl told Inside Lake this was his first time rendering aid to an infant and when he arrived Elias’ family all looked to him for help; his mind went back to his days in the academy when instructors warned him this day would come.

“You have that split second where you’re like OK—do something,” he said.

Pearl took Elias from Ochoa and after taking over CPR, “He started gasping,” and Pearl kept his airway open until he was transported to the hospital. Pearl said he is glad he can be a law enforcement officer and directly help the community. “I love that about my department, you’re not just a badge number,” he said.

Pearl has constantly asked for updates on Elias and feels like he has a bond with the entire family, “I have an attachment to him now.” Pearl is aware of Elias ’current and prior health issues and is amazed by his strength and resilience at his very young age.

“That’s a real fighter,” Pearl said. “That’s a real hero.”

3 Shots Fired After Tavares/Eustis Basketball Game, No Injuries

TAVARES, Florida—Tavares Police are investigating after three shots were fired following a basketball game between longtime rivals Tavares High School and Eustis High School, TPD said Tuesday night.

Five to six males were in an altercation outside Tavares High School around 9:30 pm. when a school resource deputy (SRD) broke the group up, TPD Public Information Officer Courtney Sullivan told Inside Lake.

The group scattered and left in at least one vehicle and fired one shot as they drove down T.A. Hux Alley near THS, she said. Two additional shots were fired as the vehicle traveled down Ianthe Street. None of the rounds were fired on school property and no one was injured, Sullivan said late Tuesday night.

“We believe this was an isolated incident between the two rivals,” Sullivan said. “It’s still developing.”

In a message to parents late Tuesday, Lake County Schools said no one was hurt and the alteration began in the parking lot between students. Both an SRD and a THS administrator intervened and a shot was fired as the vehicle left campus, according to the statement.

According to MaxPreps, this was a non-district game and the score was unavailable at press time.

Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call them at 352-343-2101, extension 4.

People Helping People, Tavares Police Department Creates Special Needs Database

TAVARES, Florida—Following in line with its motto, “People helping people,” Tavares Police Department has launched a new initiative to get to know its community members with special needs.

TPD announced Friday on its Facebook page, it is creating a database that will include details about individuals who may require a different response from officers and is asking for the public’s assistance to gather information and give the agency any ideas they feel will make the program better.

If you have a family member or friend with special needs, such as autism, Alzheimer’s disease, post-traumatic stress disorder, epilepsy or any other condition you feel the police should know about, TPD is asking you contact the agency to create a file on your loved one. Officers and dispatchers will have access to the information and individual addresses will be flagged so the officer is aware of any special circumstances before they arrive to the call.

“We are big on community policing,” TPD Public Information Officer Courtney Sullivan told Inside Lake. “There are always ways we can be better,” she said, “and there are always opportunities for the community to teach us how to better serve them.”

The department is aware those with special needs may be sensitive to lights and sirens, may be nonverbal or may have a history with law enforcement, and TPD having that information before they respond to a call will help ensure everyone stays safe.  A TPD officer who has an autistic child suggested creating a database recently, Sullivan said, and through collaboration with other officers and encouragement by Chief Stoney Lubins, the idea blossomed into this new program very quickly.

The database will include names, addresses, photos, known locations the individual frequents, emergency contact information and any additional information that may be relevant. Just last month an elderly woman was found walking alone in the city and it took officers more than an hour to identify her and find where she belonged. With the creation of this database, Sullivan hopes that hour will be cut to just a few minutes in a case of a missing or found person.

“We’ll have all the information to put out to social media and all the news outlets quickly,” she said.

Arguably the most popular law enforcement Facebook page in Lake County, the public interacts with TPD and often shows its appreciation for the humor that can be found on almost every post. Sullivan enjoys the interaction with the community through social media and appreciates how helpful they are. In the case of the elderly woman in October, so many people shared the post, the woman was identified within about 30 minutes of TPD’s original post.

“People know we’re funny, but when it comes time to be serious, people want to help us. And we love that,” Sullivan said.

Community members may call TPD’s non-emergency line at 352-343-2101, extension 4 and request an officer to come by your home or business, or you may stop by TPD, 911 Gateway Drive, Tavares during regular business hours. You can also message their Facebook page, or send Sullivan an email at [email protected].

Plea Negotiation Conference Scheduled For Former EMT Facing Child Pornography Charges

TAVARES, Florida—A former Lake EMS EMT who was arrested by Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents in June for four counts of possessing child pornography and four counts of transmitting child pornography is now facing a total of 17 felony charges.

Acting on a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), FDLE agents met James Bryan Hamrick, 30, in his Eustis driveway the morning of June 11 and took possession of his phone after obtaining a search warrant, according to an affidavit.

NCMEC’s CyberTipline Report included copies of the four videos Hamrick is accused of direct messaging (DM) on his Twitter account. The videos depict male and female children as young as 2, performing sex acts; the details of the abuse are too graphic for publication.  FDLE also received copies of Hamrick’s DMs and in those DMs, he indicates his interest in child pornography, according to the affidavit.

When questioned by an FDLE agent, Hamrick admitted to downloading the kiddie porn from Kik (a messaging app) and participating in Twitter direct messages with the account “Pedo Chic.” He also admitted taking part in conversations about sexual activity with minors, but claimed, “it was for fantasy purposes only and he never touched a child inappropriately,” the affidavit states.

Hamrick, who worked at EMS for a little over a year, also engaged in a DM conversation with an account named “Mistress.” “Mistress” agrees to engage in a sexual conversation with Hamrick if he buys a $50 gift card and screenshots a copy of the receipt. Hamrick sent “Mistress” the screenshot of a receipt from his own PayPal account, according to the affidavit.

While exchanging DMs with “Mistress” Hamrick tells her to be patient with his slow responses because he is feeding an infant child. He then sends “Mistress” a photo of him holding an infant.

Hamrick, who was fired as soon as Lake EMS was informed of his arrest, has been held in the Lake County Jail since his arrest on $80,000 bond. Hamrick is represented by Assistant Public Defender Wanda T. Greene, who filed a motion in July requesting Hamrick be released on his own recognizance due to the state not filing charges. Later that same day, that state formally filed 17 charges.

Hamrick’s next plea negotiation conference is scheduled for Nov. 9.
