“I Stole it, Just Like I’m About to Steal Yours,” Man Tells Tavares Police Officer Moments Before Attempting to Steal Patrol Car

TAVARES, Florida—A Tavares man who attempted to steal a Tavares Police car Monday morning was quickly tased by a TPD officer while he was sitting in the driver’s seat and taken into custody, according to an arrest affidavit.

TPD responded to Ace Hardware, 509 South Duncan Drive around 6:15 a.m. Monday on a report of a suspicious person and found John Fulbright Jr., 42, of Tavares, who immediately blurted out, “Take me to jail, I did it all,” the affidavit states.

When an officer asked Fulbright to elaborate, he reportedly told the officer he stole a vehicle, stole several items from Circle K a few blocks away and was loitering at Ace Hardware, while a second officer went to investigate a heavily damaged vehicle nearby, according to the affidavit.

While speaking with the officer, Fulbright claimed he could not breathe, admitted ingesting methamphetamines and asked for water. When the second officer returned from investigating the damaged vehicle, the first officer went to his patrol car to get water. Shortly after, he heard Fulbright scream and found a freshly-tased Fulbright in the driver’s seat of the second officer’s patrol car.

Fulbright was taken into custody and handcuffed, and the second officer advised she was questioning Fulbright about the heavily-damaged Honda SUV he crashed, and he said, “I just stole it, like I’m about to steal yours,” and ran over to the officer’s car, jumped in driver’s seat and attempted to drive away. The officer deployed her taser and was able to stop Fulbright, according to the affidavit.

Tavares Fire Department and Lake EMS arrived on scene and removed the taser probes from Fulbright and upon searching him, officers found a syringe with a brown residue in his left pocket. The residue was not enough to test, the officer noted.

Fulbright told officers he stole the SUV from his “baby mama” and they determined he stole it from a residence on Rosewood Lane, where he was staying on the back porch. He said he crashed the blue SUV into a tree, causing approximately $6,000 in damages.

Fulbright was arrested for burglary of an authorized emergency vehicle, resisting arrest without violence, criminal mischief, grand theft auto and possession of paraphernalia. He transported to the Lake County Jail, where he was tased again for resisting with violence, and is being held on $11,000 bond.

Mount Dora Police Tight-Lipped on Deaths of Married Waterman Village Couple

MOUNT DORA, Florida—The man and woman found dead in their Waterman Village apartment New Year’s Eve were a married couple in their 80s and the incident is a homicide investigation, Mount Dora Police Interim Chief Michael Gibson said at a news conference Sunday afternoon.

The man, 83, and woman, 80, were found shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday when MDPD responded to a 9-1-1 call from security personnel regarding a “suspicious incident” at 161 Lake Margaret Circle, located inside Waterman Village, a senior living community, Gibson said.

“The circumstances surrounding their deaths is suspicious in nature,” Gibson told reporters. “But let me be clear, this is a homicide investigation,” he said, “so we’re all transparent and up front.”

Gibson asked the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for their assistance with the crime scene and forensics and FDLE Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Lee Massie was on hand for the press conference, along with Mayor Crissy Stile and City Manager Patrick Comiskey.

Massie said FDLE is ready to assist in any way needed, “Obviously, the most important piece, I feel, will be our lab resources, the forensic science part of this,” he said.

In this reporter’s experience, it is uncommon for a local police agency to call in FDLE for assistance this early into an investigation.

Gibson gave very limited information, and most questions asked by reporters were answered with, “that’s part of the investigation.’

Stile stressed to residents they should not feel any less safe, however, officials would not confirm if the incident was a double murder or a murder/suicide “I want you all to be confident we live in a safe and strong and secure city,” Stile said.

Inside Lake asked Gibson if the community is in danger and he said, “No!” but there are no suspects in custody.

MDPD is asking anyone with information to call them at 352-735-7135 or Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS. Crimeline tipsters may be eligible for a reward.

”We will absolutely come to a successful conclusion in this investigation,” Gibson said.

Former Umatilla Babe Ruth President Admits to Stealing from Organization to Fund Gambling Habit

UMATILLA, Florida—The former president of Umatilla Babe Ruth Inc. has been arrested for stealing nearly $35,000 from the organization to fund his gambling habit, according to a probable cause affidavit.

John Joseph Farley-Gleixner, 36, of Umatilla turned himself in Wednesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest following an investigation by a Lake County Sheriff’s Office detective who began investigating after receiving a theft complaint from a representative of Umatilla Babe Ruth Inc., according to the affidavit.

The investigation found that Farley-Gleixner began misappropriating funds in May 2022 and continued for six months until a check bounced, revealing his indiscretions, a source told Inside Lake. The thefts were discovered in mid-November when the organization bounced a check for uniforms to a Mount Dora business, according to the source.

Farley-Gleixner was removed as president at an emergency meeting following the discovery of the thefts and the organization released a statement that included in part, “While this situation has placed a stain on the Umatilla Babe Ruth Organization, we can and will overcome this.” The theft caused unrest in the Umatilla Babe Ruth Inc. organization and numerous parents reached out to Inside Lake.

Farley-Gleixner, who was the sole debit card holder for the organization’s bank account, used the card to repeatedly withdraw money from various ATMs at internet gambling establishments, commonly known as “fish games,” in addition to using withdrawal slips and a United Southern Bank ATM to obtain cash, totaling $34,917.75, the detective noted. The ATM camera at United Southern Bank captured Farley-Gleixner on video completing transactions, according to the affidavit.

Farley-Gleixner advised he has a gambling problem, and he is “seeking help for it at this time,” and he told LCSO he was the only one responsible for the thefts. A warrant was issued for Farley-Gleixner’s arrest for grand theft Tuesday, and he turned himself in at the Lake County Jail just before noon Wednesday. He was released on $5,000 bond.

Christmas Carjacking and Crash Into Blueberry Field Ends in a Trip to Jail

FRUITLAND PARK, Florida—A homeless man is accused of carjacking a taxi driver, crashing the car into a blueberry field and spitting on a firefighter’s boot Christmas night, according to an arrest affidavit.

A taxi driver received a call from staff at UF Health Leesburg Hospital to pick up Troy Ravin Yar, 23, who is listed as homeless, to transport him to a cold weather shelter around 6 p.m., the affidavit states.

As the pair drove to Fruitland Park, Yar struck the victim in the right side of his neck with his fist and said, “Get the (expletive) out, I’m going to (expletive) kill you,” near the intersection of Urick Street and Thomas Avenue, the victim told Fruitland Park Police Department. The victim exited the vehicle fearing Yar had a knife to his neck, he told police, and the victim had a large gash on the side of his neck, the arresting FPPD officer noted in the affidavit. Yar then took the vehicle and crashed in a nearby blueberry field and fled the scene. He was apprehended a short time later on County Road 468.

Yar told police he took the car because he wanted to see his brother; he then complained of knee pain and Lake County Fire Rescue responded to evaluate Yar. When they arrived, Yar allegedly said, “(Expletive) you, I’ll walk to the hospital,” and spit in the direction of a firefighter. The saliva landed on the firefighter’s boot.

Yar was arrested for carjacking, battery on a firefighter and leaving the scene of a crash involving damage. He is being held in the Lake County Jail on $30,500.
