Motorcyclist killed in fiery head-on crash in Sorrento

SORRENTO, Fla. — A Tavares man was killed Saturday night when a large truck struck the motorcycle he was riding head-on, throwing him into the path of another vehicle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Shortly before 8 p.m., a 27-year-old Hobe Sound man was driving a 2008 Ford F-650 eastbound on State Road 44 near Huff Road when he crossed into the westbound lane for an unknown reason, FHP said. The Ford hit a 2023 Indian Roadmaster motorcycle head-on, causing it to burst into flames and throwing the rider, a 39-year-old Tavares man, into the direct path of a 2017 Toyota Highlander being driven by a 63-year-old Apopka woman.

The Tavares man was pronounced deceased on the scene. The Hobe Sound man was transported to HCA Lake Monroe Hospital in Sanford with serious injuries; the Apopka woman was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
