Leesburg man killed, passenger airlifted after crashing into semi-trailer blocking roadway Monday

LEESBURG, Fla. — A Leesburg man was killed and his passenger seriously injured after the pickup truck they were in crashed into a semi-truck’s trailer as it backed into a private driveway before daybreak Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Shortly after 5:45 a.m., the 57-year-old man from Leesburg was driving a 2005 Ford F-150 southbound on County Road 473, near Lake Eustis Drive, when he struck the left side of the trailer of a 2016 semi-truck that was blocking the roadway while backing into a private driveway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Leesburg man was pronounced deceased on the scene; his passenger, a 27-year-old woman, also of Leesburg, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center. The driver of the semi-truck, a 67-year-old man, and his passenger, a 63-year-old man, both of Brinkley, Arkansas, were not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
